Recessed Lighting Guide

Find recessed lighting that fits your home and your project. Start with the installation type, then compare fit, light output, and features.

1. Choose the installation type

Canless / Wafer: Designed for recessed installation without an existing can housing. Check the model's installation instructions for ceiling and junction-box requirements.

Retrofit: Designed to fit compatible recessed can housings. Confirm that your existing housing is suitable for the specific light.

2. Check the size and fit

Review the product's cutout dimensions, fixture dimensions, and required ceiling clearance. The nominal fixture size alone does not confirm the opening size or fit.

3. Compare brightness and light color

Use lumens to compare light output. Use color temperature, measured in Kelvin (K), to choose a warmer or cooler appearance. Available color temperatures and adjustment methods vary by model.

4. Choose the features you need

  • Night light: Look for a model with a separate night-light mode.
  • Gimbal: Choose an adjustable head when you want to aim the light.
  • Trim style: Compare baffle details and trim colors to suit your ceiling.

5. Review the model details

Before ordering, check the electrical specifications, location rating, dimming information, and installation instructions for your chosen model. For dimming, confirm the exact light and dimmer combination.
